Children love to learn through play. Get role play toys such as kitchen items, dolls and doll houses, play cars, etc. Name and talk about each item. Role play and incorporate greetings in the target language.
For example, my daughter has a dollhouse with dolls and furniture. When I play with her, I name the different rooms, the items of furniture and the clothes the dolls are wearing. Dolls and action figures are also great for learning body parts. Find simple recipes and have your kids help you cook. It can be something simple as a sandwich or a fruit salad. Make sure you name and show all the ingredients. Talk about each step in the target language. Ask lots of questions such as:
This is a flashcard for the word 'apple' in Italian. I use these to build vocabulary. You can also use flashcards to teach phrases, shapes, numbers, letters and anything else you can think of. I am not the best artist, but it gets the job done. Anyone can do it as long as you have time and motivation.
You can make your own masters and photocopy them as needed. Once again repetition is key. The more you expose your child to a word, a letter or topic, the more chances of them learning it and remembering it.
I just drew the letter 'A' and drew a few things that begin with that letter. While my son completed the worksheet I told him what each item was. If your child can read, tape labels on everything around you. Every time your child approaches the item, have him read the label. This will help build his vocabulary. If your child cannot read yet, don't label anything, but simply tell your child what everything is and use it in a sentence. For example, 'chair', 'We sit in a chair'. Do this until the child has learned what the items are called. |
